ABOUT

Starra Halter is a studio photographer and community arts educator based in Toledo, Ohio, whose work focuses on the responsiveness of presence. Her work comes from the study of experience, as it reflects itself onto the human body. As seen in her photography, she’s been influenced by distinctiveness in the community. Starra has worked diligently to preserve the relationship between the arts and the public. By having the fundamental understanding of the decisions and developments made in the local arts commission in Toledo, she is able to maintain an open opportunity for community art experiences.

Starra completed her BFA in 2021 from Bowling Green State University and studied community arts education as her minor. Her work has been displayed in multiple exhibitions on the Bowling Green State University campus, and well as published in BG’s Undergraduate Literary Article Prairie Margins. Furthermore, she has also started her own community arts non-profit within the school of art titled the Art Supply Exchange. To learn more about her non-profit, click here!

Maintaining a sense of understanding is imperative to the fields I’ve chosen to pursue. While working in the community, I’ve observed the significance of photography and social-justice implemented into every experience I’ve had. Ideals such as education, attentiveness, and acknowledgement are all critical to the community.

The same holds true for the art of photography. To produce work of or about an issue that is meaningful to the photographer, is to be both responsive and attentive to the environment or subject in which they work. Social-justice art education stands as a model for this integral type of thinking in the arts both individually and in the community.

The Art Supply Exchange is a student run initiative taking place in the Bowling Green State University School of Art. It is a "Give & Get" program model made by artists for artists giving students the ability to donate their used supplies from previous courses in exchange for already donated supplies from which they can choose.

As the founder, my goal is to support and contribute to the community of student artists by offering used, quality supplies to accommodate their needs as each semester brings new courses and fees. I strive to maintain the exchange as a place of opportunity for students to be able to exchange freely in an effort to both reduce the cost for students and also reduce the waste of unused supplies overall
